Caring for polymer clay earrings requires gentle handling, proper storage, and careful cleaning to keep them in good condition. Although polymer clay is durable, it is not indestructible and can be damaged by harsh chemicals, excessive bending, or improper storage.
Handling and prevention
• Handle gently: Hold the metal findings (hooks or posts) when putting on or taking off your earrings, rather than the clay itself.
• Do not bend: Polymer clay is flexible, but it can snap if bent excessively. Avoid intentionally bending your earrings to test their flexibility.
• Remove for high-impact activities: Take your earrings off before showering, swimming, sleeping, or exercising to avoid damage from moisture and impact.
• Put them on last: Apply makeup, perfume, and hairspray before putting on your earrings, as the chemicals can cause discoloration or damage.
Cleaning
• General cleaning: Use a soft, damp cloth or a baby wipe to gently wipe away any dust, dirt, or makeup.
• For stubborn stains: For tougher spots, dip a cotton swab in rubbing alcohol and gently rub the area. However, some artists warn that this could remove finishes like varnish or hand-painted details.
• Avoid harsh cleaners: Do not use acetone or abrasive materials, as these can ruin the surface and coatings.
• Be careful with additions: If your earrings have special finishes like glitter, foil, or paint, exercise extra caution when cleaning.
Storage
• Keep them safe: Store your earrings in a cool, dry place to prevent warping or fading.
• Use a jewelry box: To prevent scratches and damage, a jewelry box with separate compartments is ideal.
• Wrap them individually: For extra protection, especially when traveling, wrap each pair in a soft cloth or a fabric pouch.
• Protect from sun and heat: Do not leave your earrings in direct sunlight or a hot car, as high temperatures can cause the clay to soften or warp.
Repairing minor damage
• Re-glue broken pieces: If an earring post detaches or a small piece breaks off, a tiny amount of super glue (gel superglue is recommended by The Blue Bottle Tree) can often fix it.
• Fix cracks: Small cracks can sometimes be repaired by filling them with liquid polymer clay and rebaking the piece. For more complex repairs, it's best to consult the original artist or a professional.
