To properly care for polymer clay earrings, it's essential to handle them gently, keep them away from water and chemicals, and store them carefully. While cured polymer clay is durable, accessories and surface treatments like paint, varnish, and resin require more delicate handling.
General handling and precautions
• Be gentle: When putting your earrings on or taking them off, hold the metal components, such as the hooks or posts, rather than the clay itself.
• Avoid bending: Although cured polymer clay can be slightly flexible, bending or twisting it can cause it to break.
• Remove for high-contact activities: It is best to remove your earrings before swimming, showering, sleeping, or working out to prevent damage.
• Put on last: Always put your earrings on after applying makeup, perfume, hairspray, and lotions, as chemicals can damage or discolor the surface of the clay.
• Keep away from excessive heat: High temperatures can cause the clay to soften and warp. Avoid leaving your earrings in direct sunlight or a hot car.
Cleaning polymer clay earrings
• Wipe with a soft cloth: To remove dust or minor smudges, use a soft, damp cloth or baby wipe.
• Use rubbing alcohol for stains: For makeup or other tough stains on unvarnished clay, you can use a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol. However, do not use this method if your earrings have hand-painted details, gold leaf, or resin, as it can damage the finish.
• Clean sealed earrings with care: For pieces with resin or varnish, wipe with a soft, damp cloth and avoid abrasive cleaners.
• Polish brass components: For earrings with brass findings, polish them with a jewelry polishing cloth, Brasso, or a mixture of lemon juice and baking soda to remove tarnish.
Proper storage
• Cool, dry place: When not in use, store your earrings in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
• Prevent scratches: To avoid scratches and damage, store earrings separately from other jewelry or sharp objects. A jewelry box with compartments is ideal.
• Protect during travel: When traveling, use a small, padded jewelry box or fabric pouch. You can also wrap individual pairs in soft cloth or tissue paper for extra protection.
